Expert Seminar 'Better equipped to work in intercultural contexts'

We were looking forward to welcome our participants to this seminar which constituted the 2nd "Alice in the Field - meeting. In particular, we did welcome an alumnus of our partner university belonging to the network BISS. This allowed a more enriching and transdisciplinary exchange.

A detailed version of the programme and the curriculum can be downloaded as pdf.

Information below provides a summary of the programme and information on organisational matters.

The seminar topic was related to current trends in the non-profit-sector and was scheduled from October 22nd to 26th, 2008. Participation was free. All workshops took place at the ASFH in Berlin. Workshops started on the 23rd and finished after a get together on Sunday morning. Every participant received a certificate of attendance.

>1. Workshop on Community Development: 2 Days from October 23rd to 24th, 10am - 6pm

How do we identify and motivate a group of local actors to engage in a specific project? Social and Cultural Workers are worldwide facing the challenge to achieve more democratic rights and to find ways how to work and cope with communities', authorities' and economical interests. The trainers will introduce different aspects and promising approaches. During this workshop you gain insight how to identify and motivate a group of (local) actors to engage in a specific project.

A get together in the bar and restaurant "Rote Harfe" was scheduled for October 23rd, 8pm

>2. Workshop on Fundraising: 1 Day, October 25th, 10am-6pm

A basic requirement for every project is to have adequate resources in terms of money/staff/etc. available.

The workshop covered:
Intro to fundraising - what is it and why do people give
Different kinds of fundraising (examples): corporate, foundation, government
Asking for a gift: cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
Examples of successful fundraising

Planning and conducting a fundraising project:
Who to ask
Prospect Research
Writing a grant proposal

>3. Farewell Brunch - 1 morning, October 26th, 10am-1pm

In a relaxed atmosphere we discussed issues of common interest, such as how to follow up on the seminar outcomes and to launch a personalzed profile page to be offered to members of the AIF network.

WHAT is 'Alumni-Plus' ?

-->The DAAD has supported ASFH since 2007 in their effort to establish a relationship with former students and scientists, so-called Alumni. However, the Alumni work was mainly encompassing Germans or Alumni from developing countries. Therefore, the DAAD lately initiated the programme 'Alumni-Plus' in order to help German universities in their endeavours to reach out for Alumni in industrial nations. Hence, 'Alumni-Plus' is adjusted to citizens of industrial nations. Until the end of 2008, according DAAD guidelines, we are able to reimburse travel costs plus an additional lump sum to help in covering your accommodation, if your country is not listed by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC). To find out about your country, take a look at the DAC list.
